Want to improve your home’s use of energy? Would you prefer to be in control: guided by your own knowledge of your own home rather than by sales claims and advice for the "average" home? This course offers a deep understanding of domestic energy usage and of your home itself, something that energy measurement tools alone can never provide.

You need no previous qualifications to study this course.

Course content

For an overview, read the introductory leaflet and browse the list of topics on the right of this page. You can also study an open-access version of T152's Welcome unit in the university's OpenLearn website. Within that unit, you can experiment with a reduced version of the course workbook. You can also browse analyses of data from the course.

Tools provided

As a student, you receive two types of electricity monitor to take measurements of the electricity used by your home as a whole and by individual gadgets. You also receive a software workbook in which to record data and make the calculations you need: the maths are done for you. Here are some samples from the workbook and a video of one of the monitors.
